Variations - (Pathanthara)
2 – bhavadASara haraNa - bhava ASara haraNa : 'bhavadASara haraNa' can be split as 'bhava+da+ASara+haraNa'. It is not clear which one is the correct version. While 'ASara haraNa' means 'destroyer of demons', the meaning of 'bhavada' is not clear.
'bhava ASara haraNa' also does not make proper sense, unless 'bhava' is taken as the 'demon' (bhava ASara) (demon of Worldly Existence). In that case, it could be translated as 'destroyer of demon of Worldly Existence'.
According to Monier’s Sanskrit Dictionary while ‘da’ generally means ‘giver’, it (da) also means ‘cut off’ – ‘jIvada’ means ‘life cutter’ and ‘analada’ means ‘quenching fire’ ie ‘water’. Therefore, here also ‘da’ has been taken to mean ‘cut off’; accordingly ‘bhavada’ (bhava+da) has been translated as ‘one who cust off bhava – Worldly Existence’.
