1 - mAnOnnatim dEhi – In the books this seems to have been translated as ‘give me highest honour’ (mAna – honour). In my opinion, such a request from a true devotee does not seem to be very plausible, because such honour only goes to buttress egocentricity. Therefore, the meaning of word ‘mAna’ here may not be ‘honour’.
‘mAna’ also means ‘measure’ – yardstick. Dikshitar, in his gamaka kriyA kRti ‘mInAkshi mE mudam’, calls Mother ‘mAna mAtR mEyE’ – the measure – measurer – measured. In my opinion, Syama Sastry also uses the word in that sense. Our comprehension of reality suffers from deficiency of our yardstick – we want to measure Her intellectually by objectifying Her. The ‘unnati’ sought here is the ability to transcend intellectualism. However, the traditional meaning given in the books has been retained.
